A Year That Changed Everything
It’s been almost a year since returning to the U.S from a year abroad with our family.
And the truth is…
I’m still processing it.
Living in Peru wasn’t just a change in location.
It was a complete shift in how we lived, how we connected, and who we became as a family.
Missing More Than a Place
At first, I thought I missed the people.
Or the slower pace.
And yes, that’s part of it.
But what I really miss is who we were while we were there.
How we lived.
How we showed up.
The Challenge of Bringing It Back
Trying to bring that lifestyle back into everyday life isn’t simple.
It feels like trying to play a completely different game in the wrong environment.
Possible in some ways.
But challenging in others.
So instead of forcing it, the focus becomes:
Appreciate it. Integrate it. Then choose what comes next.
The Most Important Lessons
Here’s what that experience taught me.
1. My Definition of Freedom Changed
I used to think freedom was about money, time, or location.
Now I see it differently.
Freedom is about living life on your own terms.
And realizing how often we don’t.
2. My Patterns Became Impossible to Ignore
When you remove distractions, everything becomes clearer.
Especially the parts of yourself you’d rather not see.
Stress, reactions, emotional patterns.
All of it came to the surface.
And that wasn’t easy.
But it was necessary.
3. Growth Requires Ownership
There were moments where I wanted understanding.
Where I wanted patience.
Where I wanted things to just be accepted.
But growth didn’t come from that.
It came from being challenged.
From being called forward.
And from choosing to respond differently.
4. Healing Changes Everything
One of the most powerful parts of the journey was doing deeper inner work.
Facing patterns that were getting in the way.
Letting go of reactions that created distance instead of connection.
And becoming a more grounded, open, and present version of myself.
That shift didn’t just impact me.
It impacted my relationship and my family.
5. Clarity Comes From Space
Stepping away from routine created something rare.
Space to think.
Space to feel.
Space to reconnect with purpose.
It clarified what matters and what doesn’t.
And reinforced the desire to build something meaningful.
6. Family Growth Is the Real Win
One of the most meaningful parts of the experience was what it created for our family.
It wasn’t always easy.
But it created growth.
Resilience.
Confidence.
And the ability to navigate challenges and come out stronger.
7. Perspective Changes Everything
Being outside your normal environment gives you a different lens.
You begin to question what you once accepted.
You see things more clearly.
And you realize that there are other ways to live, think, and experience life.
8. Slowing Down Creates Connection
When life slows down, connection increases.
You become more present.
More aware.
More engaged with the people around you.
And that changes your relationships in a powerful way.
The Challenge of Coming Back
Returning hasn’t been simple.
Because once you’ve changed, it’s hard to go back to old patterns.
And maybe you’re not meant to.
Moving Forward With Intention
The goal isn’t to recreate the past.
It’s to carry the lessons forward.
To live with more intention.
To build something meaningful.
And to continue growing.
What This Means for You
You don’t need to move across the world to experience change.
But you do need to create space.
To reflect.
To question.
To grow.
A Final Thought
The experiences that change you stay with you.
If you allow them to.
And if you choose to keep moving forward instead of going back.
Big love,
JWM
